Patio season calls

The Time to party outdoors is almost upon us. This week The Pulse highlights some of the city’s top patio destinations:

Ultra

314 Queen St. W.

416-263-0330

www.ultrasupperclub.com

Ambience and clientele: Ultra appeals to its high-end and trendy clientele. Its patio is regularly jammed on hot summer evenings when toned male-model types and scantily-clad beauties discuss whatever it is hot, well-connected people discuss — world politics, nuclear physics, whatever.

Will I be tempted to risk being fired and ditch work to spend an afternoon here? It only opens after work so your desk is yours — for now.

Ideal summer drink: A melon ball martini.

Black Bull Hotel

And Tavern

298 Queen St. W.

416-593-2766

Ambience and clientele: Make good friends with the ownership in winter because you’ll need connections to get a seat on the patio on virtually any hot summer day. The casual atmosphere is a beacon for all types, particularly for those who enjoy taking in the often wild sights and sounds of Queen Street.

Will I be tempted to risk being fired and ditch work to spend an afternoon here? Send in your letter of resignation now!

Ideal summer drink: Corona — ask for a bucket of Mexico’s finest and keep ’em coming!

The Madison

Avenue Pub

14 Madison Ave.

416-927-1722

www.madisonavenuepub.com

Ambience and clientele: The Maddy is a popular pub destination, but even more so in summer when a huge patio space beckons students and neighbourhood folk. Like some sort of beer-serving black hole, this is one of those venues that sucks you in for hours and just won’t let go.

Will I be tempted to risk being fired and ditch work to spend an afternoon here? Cut your losses and apply for a job here, instead. You’ll be spending enough time at The Madison, you may as well make some cash.

Ideal summer drink: A pint of Canadian.

Bier

Markt

58 The Esplanade

416-862-7575

www.thebiermarkt.com

Ambience and clientele: This upscale pub has a seemingly infinite selection of brew from around the world, but also features a cosy patio that fills on warm summer days with corporate clientele. At night the Bier Markt plays to a decidedly younger crowd looking to secure each other rather than business deals.

Will I be tempted to risk being fired and ditch work to spend an afternoon here? Definitely, but your boss may be thinking the same thing.

Ideal summer drink: One of those massive glasses of Hoegaarden.

Allen’s

143 Danforth Ave.

416-463-3086

http://allens.to

Ambience and clientele: The backyard is an oasis. The space is large, relatively quiet and perfect for a night of drinking. Bring a large group of friends and enjoy.

Will I be tempted to risk being fired and ditch work to spend an afternoon here? Did you really want a pension?

Ideal summer drink: A shandy.
