Vandals struck dozens of headstones at the Greenwood Cemetery sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning in Glace Bay.
Cemetery chairperson Helen Grant said about 35 headstones were knocked over.
“They were tipped over, right off the bases,” she said. “I know at least one is broken, a cross someone made for a gravesite.
“You get sick to your stomach seeing this. We try to keep this peaceful for loved ones buried here and the ones who come to visit them. It is heartbreaking, that is what it is.”
Caretaker Basil McKinnon said he arrived to check the grounds at about 9 a.m. Sunday and was disheartened by what he found.
“I just feel so sorry for the people buried in here and those at home worried about damage being done to the headstones,” he said.
Word is spreading among people with loved ones buried there about what happened, he added.
“They are saying those responsible for this are not much of a citizen.”
McKinnon said members of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service were at the cemetery investigating and have promised extra patrols.
