Peace mural unveiled in Forest Lawn

Bringing together diversity, peace and serenity, residents of Forest Lawn celebrated the unveiling of a peace mural yesterday.

Titled an Allegory of Peace, the massive artwork is the fifth in a series of nine in the community, which is part of a revitalization project, according to International Avenue’s executive director Alison Karim-McSwiney.

“Our hope is perhaps this mural will serve as a reminder to people that we’re all in this together,” she said.

Aldermen Andre Chabot and Joe Ceci were both on hand for the unveiling of the mural, which is positioned on the side of a building at 4015 17 Ave. SE.

“The east side of town now has an endearing sign of peace,” Ceci said, adding the west side of the city also unveiled a Peace Pole on Sunday.

Artist Martinho Correia came all the way back from Florentine, Italy, to complete the project, which he said took “many hours” to complete.

“A lot of the ideas were from local residents. A mural this big takes a lot of time to do,” he said, adding he did have help.
