Pedalling for a good cause

One hundred and eighty-five kilometres from Ottawa to Kemptville and back is a long way to bike, but that’s nothing compared to the distance Monique Weston and her family travel every year to participate in the MS Society’s RONA MS Bike Tour.

The family comes from New Braunfels, Texas, to ride on behalf of Weston’s cousin, an MS patient, and a friend in Texas.

“You see that the money you raise helps people in their day-to-day life,” said Weston. “It helps the society, it funds research and it’s a wonderful cause.”

In its 21st year, 650 cyclists raised $410,000 for the society over the weekend, said Nadene Lee of the MS Society of Canada.

The money will fund the organization’s national and local programs and services for people living with MS.

“A lot of the money that we send to the national research program is sent back to us to fund the MS clinic at the Ottawa Hospital,” she said.
