Pedestrian death has RCMP baffled

Canmore Mounties are investigating a fatal collision that left a pedestrian dead on the Trans-Canada Highway Wednesday, mysteriously far from the town site.

Cpl. Martine Renaud said investigators are at a loss as to how the unidentified man came to be walking on the highway around 3 a.m. near the Three Sisters overpass, about an hour’s walk from Canmore, but believe he was struck by a westbound vehicle.

Renaud wouldn’t say if this is being investigated as a hit and run, noting that while no vehicle was at the scene, Mounties aren’t looking for one that may have been involved.

“There are a lot of pedestrians crossing the highway at Canmore, but that is quite far away from anything,” she said.

The identity of the victim will be released following an autopsy. No one has been charged.
