Pedestrian injured by falling ice

A female pedestrian was injured after ice fell off a rooftop this afternoon, striking her, paramedics say.

At 12:45 p.m., a woman in her 20s was walking on Bank Street near Gilmour Street when a piece of piece fell from a building.

“The larger chunk of ice scraped her head and hands,” said Ottawa paramedic spokesman J.P. Trottier.

Paramedics treated her injuries at the scene.

“This is something we do see,” said Trottier. “There’s a lot of snow buildup, and with the thaw, this is what can happen, especially in the downtown core where all the buildings are so close together.”

Police closed off the area until the roof of the building was cleared off. Paramedics are asking building owners to ensure their rooftops and awnings are kept clear of snow and ice.
