It was an historic day for two major Canadian energy companies.
Petro-Canada went kicked it off Thursday morning when shareholders voted overwhelmingly in favour of merging with Suncor. Hours later, Suncor shareholders were even more keen to link up.
“Ninety-six per cent approval by Petro-Canada shareholders and 98 per cent from Suncor shareholders, I think shows you this had really great support from shareholders.” said Suncor CEO Rick George as he sat in front of the cameras next to Petro-Canada’s Rob Brenneman.
Neither company has seen all the details of the other’s projects so there was no indication Thursday as to where efforts will be focused within the new company.
Government regulators will now rule on whether the merger can go ahead.
