Picard reaches deal with Tampa Bay Lightning

Former Halifax Mooseheads defenceman Alexandre Picard signed a multi-year contract extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday.

Picard, a former MVP of the Mooseheads, had three goals and three assists in 20 games with the Lightning after joining the team from the Philadelphia Flyers in a mid-season trade.

The 22-year-old has 28 points in 92 career NHL games.

“Picard played very well for us following his acquisition last season,” Lightning general manager Jay Feaster said in a release. “We look forward to his continued development into what we believe will be a top-four defenceman.”

It’s a one-way contract, meaning Picard is assured of at least the NHL’s minimum salary of $475,000 US, even if he is sent to the minors.

>> Bedford’s Donald MacLean has signed with the Malmo Redhawks of the Swedish Elite League after splitting last season between Switzerland’s Zurich (five points in 11 games) and Austria’s Salzburg (20 points in 13 games). The 31-year-old forward has played 41 career NHL games.

>> Former Halifax Mooseheads star Jason King has signed with Adler Manheim of the German Elite League. He played four NHL games with the Anaheim Ducks last season, but spent the bulk of the year in the American Hockey League.

King, who has played in 59 NHL games, produced 29 goals among 59 points in 65 games with the Portland Pirates.

>> Former Mooseheads blue-liner Pierre-Olivier Beaulieu has signed with the Crimmitschau Ice Pirates of Germany’s second division.
