Six people will share a $100,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of Robert Pickton for the murder of women from the Downtown Eastside, Vancouver’s police board announced yesterday.

Board member Jason McLean said tipsters received varying amounts and the allocation of the reward was based on recommendations from the Ministry of the Solicitor General, Pickton investigators (Project Evenhanded) and the city’s legal department.

McLean said “rewards can play a very important role” in generating leads for investigators and said the VPD has a good history of using monetary rewards where appropriate.

Pickton was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder in December 2008. That conviction was upheld this month by the Supreme Court of Canada.

The exact number of people who applied for the reward was not known, although it was more than six.
