The Calgary Flames have squeaked into the Stanley Cup playoffs. But one burning question remains: Where are you watching the game?
Make it a family night at Tommy Burger, located at 9629 Macleod Trail S. This cozy joint boasts great burgers and nine flat-screen TVs.
Unlike other game spots, it welcomes fans-in-training. “Kids can have a milkshake and watch the game with their dad,” says manager Sarah Anderson.
For grownups who can’t resist the lure of the Red Mile but don’t want the madness of its middle, try sticking to either end.
On the corner of 4th Street and 17th Ave, Bob the Fish offers a casual atmosphere, not to mention four projection screens and 10 TVs throughout the bar. And it’s more down-to-earth than other places on the strip.
“There’s no competition between patrons,” says regular Ryan Gibboney. “You don’t have to be a hot shot.”
On the west end of the action, there’s Beckham’s Pub and Eatery near 11th Street and 17th Ave. Split into two rooms with four big screens and five TVs each, this pub is brewing some playoff traditions this year. This is Beckham’s first Red Mile run.
Bartender Mark Baldwin recommends the Flames pizza, topped with banana peppers and jalapenos, for hungry fans.
“The best thing about this place is the pizza, by far,” he says.
For something more serene, check out Jameson’s Irish Pub at 3575 20th Ave NW. This open-air establishment is more upscale than your average pub, and they’re redoing the entertainment system for the playoffs.
“When all the TVs are in, I don’t think there’s going to be a bad seat in the house,” says manager Corey Reid. To get the crowd pumped, Reid says Flames shooters (Sourpuss and cranberry juice) are on special whenever the home team scores.
