Plane lands due to odour

The smell of an electrical odour in the cockpit caused an American Airlines flight bound for New York to make an unscheduled landing in Halifax on Thursday.

The flight was en route from Milan, Italy, to the JFK International Airport and landed without incident at 1:35 p.m., said Halifax Stanfield International Airport spokeswoman Ashley Barnes.

She said the airport’s emergency response team was standing by when the plane landed, but the 211 passengers and crew onboard were not injured.

Despite the diverted flight, Barnes said service at the airport operated as normal and the affected passengers were being re-routed through the airline.
