Police and AMA team up for car-theft prevention giveaway

Tara Winthers was one of the lucky drivers who received a free steering wheel lock at Sunridge Mall Wednesday as part of Crime Prevention Week.

“It’s a fantastic idea,” said Winthers. “It keeps your vehicle safe.” Winthers received a lock for her GMC truck, one of the top 10 vehicles stolen in Calgary.

Constable Chris Terry said that they were targeting vehicles that appeared on the top 10 list.

“The Club is a great deterrent,” said Terry. “That’s why AMA is giving them out for free.”

Aside from steering locks, officers were doling out tips to prevent stolen vehicles, such as not leaving your keys in the vehicle.

The Calgary Police Service and Alberta Motor Association partnered for the program, which handed out the devices to Calgary drivers across the city between 6:30 and 11:30 a.m. at several city malls.
