It could be several weeks before investigators determine why two teenage friends died suddenly within hours of each other early Tuesday.

Investigators have not released the identity of the girls, but a Facebook memorial site identifies them as Martha Jackson Hernandez, 17, from Richmond and Kayla LaLonde, 16, from Vancouver.

LaLonde was found collapsed outside a home on Rumble Street in Burnaby just after midnight. Hernandez was found in her home.

Friends said they had been together a few hours before they were found dead.

It’s possible that alcohol and drugs may be a contributing factor in their deaths, but police say it will take a few weeks before toxicology results come back.
