Police believe robbers targeting 7-Eleven stores

Robbers are targeting 7-Eleven stores in Vancouver, police said yesterday.

Const. Anne Longley, a spokeswoman for the department, said there have been 52 robberies at the convenience stores this year and 21 in the past month and a half alone — a robbery roughly every two days.

“Investigators believe there is more than one group operating,” Longley said.

Yesterday morning saw two incidents.

In the first, a man walked into the 7-Eleven at 984 West Broadway at 3:30 a.m. and threatened employees with a hammer. He demanded cash and cigarettes and ran from the store.

About 20 minutes later, a man tried to rob the 7-Eleven at 3011 Main St. The door, however, was locked and the clerk called police. The man discharged pepper spray outside the building and ran off.
