REGINA – RCMP charged a second person with two courts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder Friday in a violent home invasion that shocked a small Saskatchewan community.
Police are not releasing the name of the 31-year-old man until after his first court appearance on Monday, but say he is from Manitoba and was already in jail in Regina on another charge.
They would not say what the other charge was, but added it’s unrelated to the shooting.
The shooting happened Sept. 20 in the community of Fort Qu’Appelle, about 45 minutes northeast of Regina.
Police say two people burst into a home, guns blazing, after an earlier argument at another location in the community.
When the shooting stopped, Marvin Arnault, 51, and Michael Itittakoose, 24, were dead and three others seriously injured.
Arnault’s wife has said her husband shielded her from the bullets when he was shot while she called police.
Last week, a 16-year-old boy – who was 15 at the time of the shooting – turned himself in to police in The Pas, Man., and is facing the same charges.
Police are still looking for the .22 calibre gun used in the shooting, said Sgt. Brian Jones, but investigators feel they can make their case without it.
Jones maintains that, while there are indications that people involved in the shooting had ties to a gang, there is no indication it was related to gang business.
People in the home that night have said the shooters yelled, “That will teach you to mess with the IP.” The Indian Posse is a violent native street gang prevalent throughout the Prairies.
