Up to four youths were in a car that led police on a chase through south Ottawa late Monday night, at speeds topping 170 kilometres per hour.

Ontario Provincial Police officers first noticed a black Dodge speeding faster than 170 km/h northbound on Highway 416 at 11:34 p.m. When the cruiser activated its lights, the car sped off and into the city, leading police on a brief pursuit down Prince of Wales Drive where the car was clocked driving faster than 160 km/h and straying at times over the lane marker.

Police called off the pursuit in the interest of public safety, in favour of a “strategic follow.” The vehicle was found a short time later by OPP officers in the area of Carsonby Road and Third Line Road. The suspects had fled.

An OPP canine unit was called to track the suspect, but could not pick up a trail. However, a male suspect linked to the abandoned vehicle was identified. He cannot be named as he is a young offender.
