Police crack down on speeders

Police will be cracking down on speeders and drivers who make unsafe lane changes next month.

Through its Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), the City of Ottawa’s Integrated Road Safety Program is focusing on drivers that make unsafe lane changes and speeders.

In 2007, there were 1,046 reportable collisions on Ottawa roads due to drivers changing lanes unsafely. These collisions resulted in two deaths and 134 injuries – four of them life-threatening.

There were also 3,107 reportable collisions in Ottawa in 2007 as a result of drivers exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for conditions. These collisions resulted in 17 deaths and 967 injuries – including 57 serious injuries.

STEP is trying to reduce traffic fatalities or serious injuries by 30 per cent by 2010.
