Human body parts were discovered by pathway users near Max Bell Arena early yesterday morning.

Police investigators combed the hillside along Memorial Drive East through the night for more evidence, as the whole body has not yet been found.

The initial remains were found behind a bluff of poplar trees about 200 metres northwest of the arena, but police expanded the search area yesterday afternoon to include the entire pathway area stretching from Deerfoot Trail to the Barlow Trail turnoff.

Sgt. Kevin Forsen of the violent crime unit said the death is being investigated as suspicious in nature, and police are looking into whether the pathway was used a dumping ground for the remains.

“One of the possibilities we are looking at is the person did not die here,” he said.

Forsen said more details would be released once the medical examiner had conducted an autopsy, the results of which are expected later today.

It’s not clear how long the body had been at the site, though Forsen said that it was not “skeletal.”

The Calgary Police Service K-9 Unit and a HAWCS helicopter were called in to assist with the probe.
