Police, fire officials rule out Molotov cocktail in Saturday blaze

A joint investigation into a fire at a women’s rooming house Saturday night by the Ottawa police arson unit and the city’s fire department has ruled out a Molotov cocktail as the cause.

Initial reports were that a Molotov cocktail was thrown through a first-floor window at 230 Nepean St. at around 11:39 p.m., but investigators said Monday that is not the case.

The building is a rooming house for around 20 women. Most of them are new to Canada and looking for short-term accommodations. There were no injuries.

The fire, which caused $100,000 in damage to the building and contents, remains under investigation, said Ottawa fire department spokesman Pierre Savary.
