Police in Calgary and Saskatoon are dealing with their cities' first murders of the new year, while investigators are probing Edmonton's last homicide of 2008.

Two men in their early 20s were rushed to hospital in Saskatoon after they were found injured in a west-side neighbourhood just hours after 2009 had been welcomed in.

One of them died in hospital.

Police in Edmonton are investigating the city's 35th murder of last year after a young man was found in a pool of blood in the middle of a south-side avenue just before midnight.
