Police looking for man missing from Burnside hospital

Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a man who walked away from a Burnside correctional hospital.

Derek Stephen Irons, 38, was a patient at the East Coast Forensic Hospital. He left the facility on a day pass Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and was supposed to be back by the evening. He hasn’t been seen since.

Forensic unit staff and Irons’ family believe he isn’t likely to be a danger to the public, but they are concerned with his well being, according to a police press release.

The hospital is independent, but located with the Burnside Correctional Facility. Though independently operated, the people it serves come exclusively from the judicial system.

Irons, from Harrietsfield, is a white male, five-foot-10, weighing 220 pounds. He has blue eyes and brown hair and was wearing jeans, a dark ball cap and a dark winter jacket when he left the facility.

Anyone who sees Irons or has information about his whereabouts is asked to call Halifax Regional Police at 490-5016.
