Halifax Regional Police discovered dozens of marijuana plants and “other drug paraphernalia” while searching the residence where a man was shot over the weekend, spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said yesterday.
“Our officers responded to investigate a break-and-enter followed by a resident being shot,” he said of the violent struggle inside a Dartmouth home early Sunday morning. “In the course of investigating that, information was obtained which led to a search warrant.”
Palmeter said officers seized 39 plants from the Main Street home, but added drug charges hadn’t been laid by yesterday afternoon.
“We’re expecting charges to be laid, but there’s some other things that we’ve got to clarify with the Crown,” he said.
“We don’t know exactly why that person broke into the home,” he said. “Certainly it’s not uncommon to have one drug dealer break in and steal from another – it’s something that our officers will be looking at.”
Police said they responded to the shooting at 4:15 a.m., and when they arrived they found a 45-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his right leg. A witness told police he and the victim had both been “asleep inside the residence when their dog started to bark,” a news release said. Police said Sunday it didn’t appear the residents knew the suspect, who is described as a five-foot-eight black man with a thin build.
However, Palmeter pointed out “even if the individuals don’t know each other, it doesn’t necessarily make it a random incident.”
