Police planting bait cars around fair area

Police are blanketing the area around the PNE with undercover officers and a fleet of bait cars to curb vandalism and auto theft during the fair, the RCMP said yesterday.

“(We’re) working very closely with the Vancouver Police Department to curb auto crime,” said Sgt. Gord Elias with the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT).

Police started planting bait cars around the PNE in 2007, after 31 cars were broken into and 26 were stolen during the 2006 fair season. That number dropped to five break-ins and five vehicle thefts each year in 2007 and 2008.
