Police praise possible changes to provincial laws

Calgary police Chief Rick Hanson said yesterday’s proposed provincial crime legislation is another tool to build safer communities.

Three bills were proposed in the legislature yesterday in order to help police maintain safe communities throughout the province.

“We introduced it in direct response to what the police have told us they need,” said Minister of Justice and Attorney General Alison Redford.

“None of these laws on its own is the ultimate solution and we realize that.”

Hanson said it’s another way to make communities safer.

“There’s no one single fix to address the crime issues in this province, especially those that are involving organized crime or gangs,” said Hanson. “But all of these legislative changes and additional police officers are all working in support of the average Albertan to feel safer.”
