Police probe possibility of serial arsonist

Halifax Regional Police are trying to determine if they have a serial arsonist on the loose in northend Halifax.

Police say two deliberate fires were set in the 6,000 block of North Street in Halifax overnight Friday, bringing the total number of incidents like this to five in the area since Dec. 11.

“We’re not sure if these buildings are randomly selected or somebody is targeting them specifically for some reason,” said police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter, adding they have all been set at residential locations.

In the two most recent incidents, police say they were first called to the 6,300 block of North Street at 10:55 p.m. after a small fire was discovered under the deck of a residence. Police say about an hour later, they were called to the 6,200 block of North Street after a fire was discovered in the stairwell of an apartment building.

Police say investigators have determined both fires were deliberately set. There were no injuries and damage was minor.
