Halifax Regional Police are investigating a “very shocking” incident after a 19-year-old Dalhousie University student was grabbed from behind by a man while walking in south-end Halifax on Wednesday night.

Police say at 9 p.m., the female victim was walking alone on South Street near Henry Street when she was grabbed by a man who attempted to pull her into an alley between two houses.

A man and woman walking by saw what was happening, police say, and inquired what was going on. Police allege this startled the suspect and the victim was able to escape.

Police say the victim reported the incident to police five hours later. She wasn’t injured, but “very shaken.”

“This is as alarming to police as it is to the public,” commented police spokeswoman Theresa Rath “We’re going to do as much as possible to garner more information.

“It’s very shocking.”

Police say the victim wasn’t able to give a good description of the suspect. The only thing police have is he’s white and has a deep voice.

Police are looking to speak with the man and woman who passed by when the alleged assault took place to see if they can offer more information. University spokesman Billy Comeau told Metro the victim was a Dalhousie student, but gave no other details.

Due to the incident that took place near the Dalhousie campus, the university issued a security bulletin through email to students and staff to let them know of the alleged assault.

“We just want to make people aware of the incident,” Comeau said. “We always encourage our students to be aware of their surroundings and to take all precautions when they’re out travelling.”

Any relation?

• Halifax Regional Police spokeswoman Theresa Rath said it’s too early to tell whether this alleged incident is related to the person they are looking for in relation to a sexual assault in the Halifax’s south end last month.

• In the early morning hours of Feb. 7, police say a 20-year-old victim and her friend were walking home in the area of Queen and Morris streets when a man reached under the victim’s skirt and touched her when he approached them. Police say the suspect later produced a small, pipe-like object and threatened both women.
