Police release sketch of suspect in hammer assaults

Ottawa police have released a sketch of a man suspected of attacking three women in separate daytime incidents in Hintonburg and Centretown.

The man attacked two women on the afternoon of Dec. 11, one on Albert Street near City Centre Avenue and another on Spender Street near Hamilton Street.

On Jan. 4, a man fitting the same description assaulted a woman at Gilmour and Bay streets.

In Hintonburg, women are being advised to exercise extra caution while walking and turn off iPods and similar devices.

“It’s so important not to wear those earphones when you’re out and about, because you don’t hear what’s going on around you,” said Cheryl Parrott, co-chair of the Hintonburg Community Association’s security committee.

The assaults on pedestrians, she said, are particularly disturbing in these downtown neighbourhoods.

“This is a walking community, as is Centretown,” she said.

“Lots of people don’t have cars, lots of people walk everywhere.”
