Police seek caller in delivery shooting

Halifax Regional Police want to speak with the person who placed an order with Panada Pizza on Saturday night, a call that ultimately led to a part-time delivery driver being shot dead.

Donald Chad Smith, a 27-year-old from Windsor Junction, was found outside of 15 Joseph Young St. in Highfield Park just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Smith was shot outside the apartment complex and hadn’t yet made the delivery. They also say the order in question was called in from an outdoor payphone on nearby Highfield Park Drive between Joseph Young Street and Burnside Drive.

It’s still unknown to police the ID of the person who made that call.

“We are interested in speaking with this person to see what information they have — to see if there is any connection — and there very well might not be,” said police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter.

“We want to make sure we cover all the bases.”

Smith had only been working at Panada Pizza for a couple of days before being fatally shot.
