Police seek man in theft of senior’s car

Calgary police want public help apprehending a local scoundrel suspected of attacking a senior citizen.

As a 73-year-old woman approached her car in the Market Mall parking lot on March 12, a man pushed her out of the way before driving off with her vehicle, according to police.

Thanks to an eyewitness account, police were able produce still shots of the suspect from a video surveillance tape. As a result of several tips, Det. Jeff Klinger said police were able to identify the suspect as Aaron Robert Varalta, 34, and issued a warrant for his arrest for robbery.

“We just need to find him and we’re hoping once again that the citizens of Calgary can help us out and identify this person,” Klinger said. “The only word of caution, though, is that this person is known to police. He does have a violent past and if you do see him we ask that you call 911 immediately.”

Varalta is also wanted on a warrant for a conditional sentence breach.

The woman wasn’t hurt, and her car and its belongings were found on March 19 in a nearby parking lot.
