Edmonton police are on the hunt for a suspect after a cabbie was assaulted in the west end yesterday morning.
Police say a cab driver picked up a lone male shortly before 4 a.m. near 154 Street and Stony Plain Road who wanted to be dropped off at an industrial area west of the city limits. He also wanted a lift back into the city, said police.
Police say once the driver dropped off the male near 124 Street and 116 Avenue, the suspect threatened the cabbie and demanded cash.
But despite being injured, the cabbie successfully fought off his attacker and escaped. City police said the attacker drove off with the taxi.
Police say the car was recovered near Mayfield Road a few hours later.
The suspect is described as a 30-year-old male of average height and a stocky build. Police say the man could be native. A photo was released to the media in the early afternoon.
Detectives with the police service’s West Division are continuing with the investigation.
