Police STEP up action against unsafe drivers

Police will be cracking down on speeders and drivers who make unsafe lane changes next month.

Through its selective traffic enforcement program (STEP), the city’s integrated road safety program is focusing on drivers who make unsafe lane changes and those who speed.

In 2007, there were 1,046 reportable collisions that occurred on Ottawa roads due to drivers changing lanes unsafely. These collisions resulted in two deaths and 134 injuries — four of them life-threatening.

There were also 3,107 reportable collisions in Ottawa in 2007 as a result of drivers exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for conditions. These collisions resulted in 17 deaths and 967 injuries, 57 of them serious.

STEP is trying to reduce traffic fatalities or serious injuries by 30 per cent by 2010.
