Vancouver police say not wearing a helmet and riding on the sidewalk might just earn you a ticket during Bike Month.
The VPD initiated a campaign yesterday to improve cyclist education — and beef up enforcement — throughout the summer.
“We’ll give people a bit of leeway,” said Sgt. Paul Ballard, adding that police will give cyclists one warning before issuing a ticket.
He added that enhanced enforcement applies to all road and vehicle users, including drivers.
After all, continued Ballard, the VPD hopes to encourage bike education, not just penalize cyclists who break the rules.
“We really want to encourage cyclists to behave like law-abiding motorists,” added Sgt. Brian Green. This includes heeding road signs and traffic lights.
