A teenage girl has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in Calgary’s northeast.

The 14-year-old girl was crossing the street with a 16-year-old friend at McKnight Boulevard near Centre St. N. just after 7 p.m. on Saturday night when she was hit by a vehicle travelling westbound.

The 37-year-old driver of a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix was driving in the median lane when the girl was struck by the passenger-side corner of the vehicle.

Duty Insp. Keith Pollock said police are still investigating whether the girl was attempting to cross the street against a red light.

“There was a set of lights at the intersection and we’re still trying to determine who had the lights and what colour they were at this point,” he said, adding the investigation will determine what, if any, charges will be laid.

  • The driver of the vehicle and the girl’s friend weren’t injured in the collision. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.
