Police still targeting three ‘Bs’ after blitz

Police still aren’t tolerating any biking, blading or boarding on the sidewalks of Whyte Avenue, though a recent ticketing blitz has ended.

A recent crackdown on riders illegally using sidewalks netted 48 issued tickets — 40 to cyclists, seven to skateboarders and one to a rollerblader.

Fines ranged from $100 to $250.

Preceding the campaign, officers handed out 126 verbal warnings a week before tickets were written up.

“That was the main focus of this project,” said Edmonton Police Services spokeswoman Patrycia Thenu. “The purpose of this was never to ticket as many people as possible; it was to educate the public.”

The campaign isn’t over yet, she said, adding, “We want to stress that beat officers will still be on the lookout.”
