Police want independent groups for future internal investigations

RCMP and chiefs of municipal police forces in British Columbia called on the provincial government yesterday to create an independent organization to investigate shootings that involve police and serious allegations against them.

Supt. Bill McKinnon, president of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police, said such an agency would help restore public confidence in policing, which has been hurt by incidents such as the death of Robert Dziekanski, who died after being stunned by an RCMP Taser at Vancouver’s airport.

“The (association) is calling for the creation of this new unit in order to build public trust and confidence,” McKinnon said at a joint news conference with RCMP at the national force’s headquarters in Vancouver.

McKinnon said the agency should be led by civilians and should investigate incidents of death or serious injury involving police, and serious allegations of misconduct against officers. It would “restore the public confidence in policing in the province of British Columbia.” the canadian press
