Halifax police have received two reports of people soliciting donations over the phone and claiming to represent the department.
Police have learned the person requests money to help fund a program designed to teach youth safe Internet use.
The Halifax Regional Police say it does no such fundraising.
"The individuals targeted in this case felt there was something suspicious about the call and contacted the police," a police statement says.
Halifax Regional Police recommends citizens not give money or personal information to anyone, whether solicitation occurs by telephone or in person, unless you have initiated the contact or you are certain of the identification of the individual and the legitimacy of the organization they claim to represent.
