Roy Moore, the Alabama Senate candidate believes the last time America was great was when the country had slaves.

Moore made these comments during a campaign rally in Florence, Alabama in September. But his remarks have resurfaced in a viral tweet just a few days ahead of a statewide election in Alabama, which will be held on December 12 against Democrat opponent Doug Jones.

During the campaign event, a member of the audience asked Moore when the last time he believed America was ‘great’ and he said something that shocked many people in the audience.

“I think it was great at the time when families were united — even though we had slavery — they cared for one another. Our families were strong, our country had a direction.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, the person who asked Moore the question was one of the few African-American people in the audience at the event.

When Moore made his remarks, it didn’t receive much attention until recently.

Former Obama Administration official Eric Columbus shed light on Moore’s comments from two months ago in a tweet that went viral on Thursday.

As soon as he tweeted what Moore said, Twitter exploded with reactions to his remarks.

During the same event, Moore referred to Native Americans and Asians as “reds and yellows," according to the Los Angeles Times. Moore seems to have a history of making insensitive remarks. In October he referred to the Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling as “even worse” than the ruling that said African-Americans were not citizens.

Despite his insensitive remarks and the recent sexual misconduct allegations against him, President Trump fully backs the Alabama candidate Roy Moore.
