Poll finds majority would prefer a change to property tax policy

The majority of people in Halifax Regional Municipality would prefer to pay property taxes based on the cost of services received, rather than property assessments, according to a new poll by Corporate Research Associates.

The poll of 400 people says six out of 10 residents would prefer property taxes based on cost of services rather than the current model of property value.

Residents of Bedford and Sackville were more likely to prefer costs based on services (68 per cent), whereas Dartmouth residents were least favourable of a new taxation method (54 percent).

“That is not surprising given that rising assessments have led to significant increases in taxes paid by most property owners since amalgamation,” Don Mills, President and CEO of CRA, said in a news release.

The results are accurate within 4.9 percentage points, 95 times out of 100.
