Poll: Swiss are wary of foreigners

A majority of Swiss favor automatic expulsions of foreigners who have committed serious crimes such as murder, while many also back a plan to impose minimum taxes on the very rich, a poll showed.

ZURICH – A majority of Swiss favor automatic expulsions of foreigners who have committed serious crimes such as murder, while many also back a plan to impose minimum taxes on the very rich, a poll showed.

Switzerland will hold a referendum on Nov. 28 in which voters can decide whether the country should automatically kick out foreigners who have been found guilty of murder, rape and trafficking in drugs or people and other serious offenses.

The federal Justice Ministry has warned that a “yes” vote could bring Switzerland into conflict with international legal obligations such as the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national or social origin.
