The pomegranate: To some it’s simply a pinkish-reddish fruit; to others, a symbol of fertility. But to many more it’s quickly become the emerging trend whetting the palates of liquor aficionados.
Pomegranate products have crept onto the shelves of the LCBO in several forms, from premium drinks like PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur to more casual beverages such as Pomtini Coolers.
But the newest liquor to offer up a hint of this sweet, succulent fruit is Pearl Pomegranate Vodka, a premium pomegranate flavoured vodka.
Named the best-flavoured vodka at the 2007 World Beverage Competition, Pearl Pomegranate ($34.95 per 750-ml bottle) launched in 100 LCBOs in the Ottawa and Toronto area in the spring of this year, but has been in the U.S. for two years already.
“The pomegranate has a sweetness to it, but it’s not overbearing, which makes it a great pairing with vodka,” says Natalie Robinson of Knox & Company, distributors of Pearl Pomegranate Vodka.
The Pearl line has been around since 1999, starting with Pearl Original, but has since expanded to include Pearl Lo Coco (coconut-flavoured vodka) and, of course, Pearl Pomegranate.
Robinson says one of the reasons we’re likely seeing a rise in pomegranate products is because of the health benefits. “It is good for you (and is rich in antioxidants),” Robinson says.
Made from soft winter wheat and pure Canadian Rocky mountain water, Pearl Pomegranate has been distilled five times and filtered six times, giving it an ultra smooth taste. It can be served neat, chilled, in a martini or in a cocktail, but Robinson says one of her favourite ways to serve the new flavoured vodka is in a Pearl Pomade.
“It gives it the pop of the sweetness of the pomegranate and it’s easy to do,” Robinson says.
All you need for the Pearl Pomade is ice, lemonade, Pearl Pomegranate, and a patio to enjoy it on.
