Police forces arrest 23 people across Ontario

A massive child pornography sweep that netted 23 people across the province this week is just the tip of the iceberg, police said yesterday — and a harbinger of many more arrests to come.

Using 25 search warrants, police forces from London to Ottawa and as far north as Red Lake stormed into homes Monday, arresting 22 people, including a 28-year-old woman from Whitby and a young offender from Hamilton.

After what police are billing as the largest co-ordinated takedown in Ontario’s history, a Toronto man turned himself into police later that evening. And three other suspects — in Hamilton, York Region and Ottawa — are still outstanding.

"It’s a major problem for us and police services around the world," OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said yesterday. "We’ll stop at nothing to eliminate offenders. You can run but you can’t hide. Sooner or later we’ll identify you, arrest you and bring you to justice."

With more than 15,000 people in Ontario — thousands in Toronto alone — using their computers to trade images of child sexual abuse across the globe, police say they have just begun to chip away at what investigators are calling a social epidemic.

During the news conference yesterday, which was International Safer Internet Day, police said individual collections of child pornography are increasing in size. Images, which include children engaged in bestiality and bondage, are becoming ever more violent.

Police laid more than 75 criminal charges Monday, including weapons and drugs offences.

thousands of perpetrators

  • The alleged offenders, who come from all walks of life and range in age from under 18 to 65, are not linked to one another, police said, but were chosen from thousands of possible perpetrators.
