Port of Montreal is thriving again

Traffic through the Port of Montreal has returned to pre-recessionlevels after increasing almost eight per cent compared with last year,reaching about 11.8 million tonnes in the first six months of 2010.

Traffic through the Port of Montreal has returned to pre-recession levels after increasing almost eight per cent compared with last year, reaching about 11.8 million tonnes in the first six months of 2010.

“The increase in containerized cargo traffic over the first six months of the year is confirmed, bringing us back up to the 2007 level for the same period, while last year at this time we were below the 2005 level,” said Sylvie Vachon, president and CEO the Montreal Port Authority.

Container traffic posted an increase of about 12.6 per cent for the first six months of the year, rising to 6.1 million tonnes from 5.4 million tonnes in the same period in 2009.

Iron ore showed the most growth, with an upswing of 376 per cent compared to the same period in 2009.
