Possible Melvin connection to reported shooting in Spryfield

Halifax Regional Police are investigating a shooting in the Spryfield community.

Spokeswoman Theresa Rath said officers found two bullet holes in the back of a building at 390 Herring Cove Road after being called about the shooting last Friday at 8 p.m. The problem is it happened several hours earlier, some time during the early morning hours, she said.

“We already have that gap that we’re trying to deal with,” she said of police trying to piece together what happened. “We are asking for the public’s assistance.”

So far, Rath said, there is no indication anyone was injured, but added police are exploring the possibility of this shooting being related to other recent violent acts in the area.

It took place near Jessy’s Pizza, the business Jim Melvin Sr. was standing outside of when shots were fired at him last November. Jimmy Melvin Jr., his son, has been shot in separate attacks since being released from jail around the same time, and there has been speculation about a drug war between his family and the Marriotts.

The online White Pages say a Jim Melvin owns Sprytown Fast Cash at 390 Herring Cove Road, one of several businesses at that address. Rath said she believed the business that was hit is a motorcycle shop.
