Possible Melvin connection to weekend shooting incident

Halifax Regional Municipality can add to its growing list of violent crimes this month, with HRP responding to a man shot in the city’s north end Friday night and RCMP receiving a call of shots fired in Fall River Saturday.

Halifax Regional Police said officers showed up on Creighton Street in Halifax at 8:15 p.m. Friday, but when they arrived the male victim, who sustained several gunshot wounds, had already been taken to Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre. He was later released with non-life threatening injuries. Investigators learned suspects might have fled in a dark-coloured, four-door car.

Halifax RCMP showed up at a Philip Drive home in Fall River at 1:50 p.m. Saturday. The house reportedly belongs to James Melvin Sr.

“One shot actually hit a residence and we seized some bullet fragments,” spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin said Sunday, adding police are looking for a car, possibly a black Acura.

Several media outlets reported Jimmy Melvin Jr. was inside at the time, but Taplin wouldn’t confirm that. The Melvins are a well-known local crime family believed to be involved in a drug war.

“We’d be comparing it with any other recent shootings in the HRM to see if there’s any relation,” Taplin said. There have been several shootings in HRM this month, in addition to three murders.
