Paul Postma has had a hot hand lately for the Calgary Hitmen.
Postma notched four more assists last night as the Hitmen (48-7-3-1) beat the Kamloops Blazers 8-1 at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
“You set your goals high,” said Postma, who has put up 10 goals and 19 assists during a 14-game scoring streak, a career high. “Everything’s been going absolutely awesome and I couldn’t ask for anything else.”
Prior to the season, Postma’s goal was to provide veteran leadership after the graduation of blue-chip prospect Karl Alzner, who’s now patrolling the blue-line for the Washington Capitals.
“Everyone thought that our defence was going to be struggling a little bit after Karl left last year, so there were some big shoes to fill and we’re just making sure that we’re filling them,” said the 19-year-old Red Deer native, who leads a defence corps that includes three other drafted players in Alex Plante (Oilers, frist round, 2007), Keith Seabrook (Washington, second round, 2006) and Michael Stone (Coyotes, third round, 2008).
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Thrashers absolutely stole Postma with the seventh-last pick of the 2007 entry draft (seventh round, 205th overall).
During a 4-2 win for the Hitmen over the Kootenay Ice last Sunday, Postma notched his 20th goal of the season to break Kenton Smith’s club record for most goals by a defenceman in a single season.
“There are some game stats that go out before the game and I kind of took a peek at it,” said Postma, who also capped off a five-game goal-scoring streak, another club record for rearguards. “I knew I was getting close.”
With 15 points in his final 13 games, Postma can break Matt Kinch’s club record for points by a blueliner (84) in one season.
