A pothead is being blamed for a fireball that lit up the evening sky in Edmonton on Saturday.

An Epcor spokesman said a failed piece of electrical equipment — a pothead — likely caused the explosion at a substation.

The device is a pot-like insulator, which is used to connect underground electric cables to overhead lines.

At around 8:30 p.m., the fireball was seen shooting 30 to 40 feet in the air and Edmonton Fire Rescue was called to the scene.

Epcor’s Scott Lundy said the reason for the equipment failure is still under investigation, but no one was injured in the incident and there was no disruption in service.

There was no word yet on a damage estimate for the substation.
