“This past year we have all seen what the power of the people can do,” show host Queen Latifah said at the start of the broadcast — the first of the 2009 award show season.
“The answer tonight is, ‘Yes we can,’” the Grammy-winning singer and movie star said as she walked along the front row of the Shrine Auditorium in L.A.
Adam Sandler, the star of Bedtime Stories, took home the first award of the evening, for funny male star. Reese Witherspoon won for favourite female movie star and Will Smith was named favourite male action star.
Ellen DeGeneres won favourite TV talk show host. “To my roommate, Portia, thank you very much as well,” she joked about her spouse, Portia De Rossi, during her acceptance speech.
