Pregnant women overwhelm IWK vaccine clinic on first day

The IWK Health Centre had to shut its doors to pregnant women hoping to get the H1N1 vaccine Thursday, as droves of mothers-to-be pushed the clinic over capacity on the first day it was offering the service.

A total of 238 women received the vaccine before capacity was reached around noontime, and health officials anticipate the clinic will continue to be busy when it re-opens today from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Janet Morash, 34, was one of the women on hand to get the shot Thursday morning.

“I’m 37 and a half weeks, so it’s only a couple more weeks to go,” she said. “And with that, not knowing how much longer I would actually have to have the baby immunized, it’s quite important to make sure it gets done now.”

She waited more than two hours for the vaccine, but said it “wasn’t that bad.”
