"Dozens of hours and hundreds of questions later, one fact became crystal clear: Judge Gorsuch is exceedingly qualified to become the next Justice of the Supreme Court," according to the White House.

"President Donald J. Trump nominated Judge Gorsuch because of his unwavering dedication to equal justice under the law, strict constitutional principles, and his history of fighting for all Americans."

If confirmed, Gorsuchwould fill the seat left vacant by the late Justice AntoninScalia. With two 80-year-old sitting justices and a third nearing 79, Trump could potentially fill those seats with more conservative justices than their predecessors, thus tipping the court to the right.
