THE SKINNY: Jamal Mayers, Lee Stempniak and Ian White scored for the Leafs, who were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention the previous night but were the better team in earning a win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night.
CHASING MARTIN: White made it 3-1 in the second period with a blue-line blast that went over a kneeling Martin Biron’s left shoulder and into the net. Biron might have stopped the shot had he stayed on his feet. Flyers coach John Stevens then pulled Biron. Shots were 28-18 in Toronto’s favour at the time.
THE PENALTY: The NHL fined the Leafs $500,000 and stripped them of a fourth-round draft pick yesterday for a CBA violation over the signing of Jonas Frogren last year.
THE QUOTE: Leafs GM Brian Burke faced the media earlier in the day and vented on the team’s fourth straight playoff-free season. “This is a day that represents failure,” said Burke. “Any day you have to stand in front of the media and talk about not qualifying for the playoffs should be a kick right in the groin to everyone in the organization.”
THE NEXT GAME: The Leafs host the Habs Saturday.
